about the initiative.
introducing art that gives back.
The Little Wing Initiative seeks to creatively combine art with research to call attention to our dwindling bee populations and support environmental sustainability initiatives through creative solutions. Nature is our Giving Tree, our Little Wing, continually inspiring us and supporting life. It's time we give back.

LITTLE WING
by Jimi Hendrix
Well, she's walking through the clouds,
With a circus mind that's running wild,
Butterflies and Zebras,
And Moonbeams and fairy tales.
That's all she ever thinks about.
Riding with the wind.
When I'm sad, she comes to me,
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
It's alright, she says it's alright,
Take anything you want from me,
Anything.
Fly on little wing.

Sandy and Little Wing
"As a former hive-owner and the daughter of an environmental sustainability engineer, I’m a born nature lover and have worked with the Environmental Media Association, the United Nations and the Audubon Bird Society since childhood. I started the Little Wing initiative to combine these passions with the goal of environmental protection and advocacy. Inspired by our beloved bees first and Jimi Hendrix's etherial words, we hope to encourage our winged friends to "fly on"!" - SANDY
Human-Bee Collaborations
As part of the Little Wing initiative, we're currently working on an innovative musical bee duet. Folk music has a long-standing practice of featuring animals in recordings with the goal of advocating for the species ala Judy Collins' whale song collaborations with biologist Roger Payne (1969). Sandy's musical collaboration will be based on field recordings and biological research on wing wear (Foster, 2011) bee tonality (Bromenshenk, 2009) and benefits of human-bee vibro acoustic interactions.

Sustainability
After helping to install one of the first green roofs in Los Angeles (pictured) to provide habitat, pollination and nesting grounds for wildlife in the city, Sandy was further spurred to pursue innovative projects to support the environment. Through her work as an artist, student of nature and scientist at MIT, she is inspired to combine her research efforts with her music to call attention to the plight of nature while devising innovative soloutions through antidisciplinary fields.
